I cannot believe Leah is turning 4 already. It seems only yesterday she was placed in our arms and our lives have been forever changed. Leah is so loving and happy and full of life. We thank God always and again for the miracle of Leah.
I, as Leah's mother am mindful today of another mother who marks this date alone with her thoughts of a daughter she does not know. I pray she feels the love of God in her life, and is comforted by knowing her daughter is loved. Giving Leah the precious gift of life was an unselfish choice. I pray Mariya has the peace of Christ with her today and all the days of her life.

A Precious Priceless Picture

I received a wonderful email from our contact in Ust Kamenogorsk which contained a second solid contact with Leah's birthmother. A picture, of her and one of Leah's brothers. Words cannot express the emotions I felt opening that attachment and seeing the photos download before my eyes. A solid link to Leah's beginning of life. An answer to one of the many questions, I am sure Leah will ask one day. This gift is both precious and priceless. Seeing the face of your birthmother, and being spared a lifetime of wondering if that face in the crowd is her.
Leah is still to young to understand her adoption story, so for now I search, collect, preserve and protect the pieces of her life story I am able to uncover. Each snippet of information a gift, and an intricate part of who Leah is, and of the women she will grow up to be.
As her parents, our unconditional love for Leah drives our desire to learn all that we can for her now, so that when her intellectual brain matures and meets her emotional heart we can share with Leah, her truth. We pray that God who created her, and then allowed us to become her parents, will guide us as we continue on this journey in waters that for us, are uncharted.
I am not prepared to share these photos on line, as I feel this part of Leah's story is hers and hers alone to share when and, if she chooses.
I am truly greatful however for the difficult choices Leah's birthmother has made. She has my total respect and admiration. I can only hope fostering this connection somehow brings Leah's birthmother peace.

A DAY AT THE LAKE, a memory created and a new friendship begins

Cyber Moms share the first of, I pray, many memories. Blogging can serve as a vehicle to form friendships for life. One just has to make the effort. Yesterday in response to an email I received from Pam, a Mom I met online because of our blogs, resulted in our meeting and sharing a wonderful day with family. Nicholas and his mother Pam who live in Virginia, were visiting their beautiful extended family at their Lake House in NJ and after months of a cyber friendship we finally met.
Our cyber friendship began well over a year and a half ago because Pam adopted Nicholas from the same baby house that we adopted Leah from in Ust Kamenogorsk, Kazakhstan. Leah is 3 months older than Nicholas and when Pam and her Mom were in Ust bonding with him,they saw Leah frequently as she was in the same room as Nicholas. Pam and her Mom met our daughter a few months before we arrived to adopt her, and Leah left an impression on their hearts.
I cannot speak for Pam, but as the Mother of an Internationally Adopted child, providing the opportunity for my child to form friendships with other children who share the same heritage, homeland and history I feel is a gift to our children. As Leah grows up and comes to understands her adoption story, having friends who can totally relate to, and understand some of her inner thoughts and feelings, is a God send.
As one can imagine, our day was to short with so many life experiences to talk about. Conversations were easy, as we felt so warmly welcomed by Pam and Nicholas, Zitsi, Joe, Mary, Farrell and of course Grandma, the matriarch of this close knit loving family. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted by majestic views of a beautiful lake, and made to feel as we were old friends reuniting after a long absense.
Leah and Nicholas were immediately drawn together with the innocent acceptance children inherently are blessed with. After a few short minutes of play Leah announced "Mommy I love him can I keep him". Our spontaneous laughter almost brought the house down as I explained to Leah her request would have to wait a few years and, would require Pam's approval.
The pictures say it all about this wonderful day. Christopher loved his time there also, and had new adventures the likes of which every 14 year old should have the opportunity to experience. A padde boat, a majestic lake, a fishing pole, and freedom to explore.
As we all sat down to a pasta dinner so obviously prepared with love and by the hands of great experience, we felt honored to join this family in a prayer of thanksgiving. This tender moment confirmed for us Gods presence at this spontaneous gathering of new friends and family.

Our Hearts Joined

I have exciting new to share.

Many of you, who have followed our journey, know of the meeting that took place in Ust Kamenogorsk between myself, and Leah's biological mother. During our return trip after we took custody of Leah, I felt in the depth of my soul as her mother, I had to do everything in my power to locate, and attempt to meet the mother who gave birth to my daughter. As ours was an International Adoption, I felt driven to search here and now, because of the love I felt for my daughter. After all, I was now, the only mother Leah would ever know.
I knew first hand, because of my husband’s adoption, and a lot of adoption research, that Leah would always wonder about the mother who gave birth to her. I was also sure her mother (who had 3 other children) would never forget about Leah. In the telling of her adoption story I wanted to be able to tell Leah I did all I could to find the pieces of her life that would make her feel whole. And in the planting of the seeds of love and respect for the mother who gave her life, I desperately wanted to be able to fill Leah's ears with words that came directly from her mother’s heart.
I also hoped to look into her mothers eyes, and have her look into mine in an effort to join our hearts. Together the love shared in our hearts would sustain, and nurture our daughter. I prayed she would agree to this meeting, and although difficult, somehow feel it the miracle I believed it would be.

So we hired a private translator and driver to help us find Leah's biological mother before we left Ust Kamenogorsk for good. I already had her address, as it was in the court documents I received from our adoption. So with address in hand we drove to the apartment where Leah’s biological mother lived. After taking a few photos, I instructed the translator to go alone into the building and ask Leah’s mother if she would agree to speak with me.

I waited in the car for what seemed like an eternity until the translator returned. She was not home, but the neighbors told our translator where she worked. So we drove to her job. This time I instructed the translator to explain we would return after she was through with work so as to not interfere with her day. Again I waited in the car with an anxiety level higher than I had ever experienced in my life. The translator returned alone, but said she would be out in a few minutes. Tears were difficult to hold back, and I could feel my heart rate and breath quicken. Another miracle was unfolding in my life. I prayed God would guide my words.
As you can imagine this meeting, mother facing mother, was intense. Blue eyes peering into green, emotions running high, nervous voices, shaking hands and open vulnerable hearts. In uncharted waters strangers shared words both needed to hear. Words I will never forget, as they were for all intents and purposes, a mother's final gift, a good bye, to a daughter she would never know. She truly wanted me to understand why she gave Leah up. She told me of her life, of Leah’s brother's and sister, and of her daily struggle just to survive. As I listened to what sounded like a confession, I so wanted her to know I understood, I felt her pain and I didn’t sit in judgment. Through the translator I told her “ I understand ” and so would her daughter when the time came.
All I asked of her was her permission, and her blessing, for me to take Leah as my own. The look in her eyes, and the tone of her voice in reply to my request really didn’t need the translation. She said yes, and at that moment our hearts joined.
When Leah is old enough to understand, I am sure, I will repeat this conversation again and again, as Leah works through, and processes her adoption story.
As we talked about issues one would imagine a birth mother would ask of adoptive mother, our emotions began to settle. She had many questions, and as each question was asked, translated and answered the love we both felt for Leah was palpable.
When our meeting came to an end, my last question took the translator and Leah’s biological mother off guard. I asked if she would consider keeping in touch to remain a part of Leah’s life. Both women were visibly taken back as adoption in Kazakhstan is closed and final.
I had prepared a letter for Leah’s mother which also contained all our contact information and handed it to her. Through the translator she said she wanted, and would keep in touch. She even offered to send photos for Leah.
After returning to the USA, I waited word from her but received none. I knew of her situation, as she had shared that with me so I decided to send another letter and pictures to the address I had for her. Still no response.
I was not ready to give up. When friends of ours, whom we met because of this blog, were going to travel to Ust for their second adoption I asked them to look for Leah’s mother again. I was going to make one last effort to “keep in touch” with Leah’s birth family.
Well today I received an email from a local resident of Ust Kamenogorsk because of the efforts of our wonderful friends.
Below is a copy of the email I received. I have removed Leah’s biological mothers name out of respect.

Dear Chris, Ann and Leah Young!
Yesterday I spoke with XXXXXX XXXXXXXX. Finally I found her at the old apartment. She was there with her children taking care of her mother who is ill now. XXXXXX was a little bit nervous and didn’t want to let me in, so we spoke on the doorstep. She said that she wants to keep contact and she is not turning away. First letter that you sent she wasn’t able to translate, because it was written by hand and was illegible. Last letter she received in spring, this time she was able to read it and she began to write an answer. xxxxxx wants to add pictures of the whole family. I suggested sending her letter and pictures by e-mail, she agreed. When she is ready with the letter, I will take it and translate it to you and also make pictures of her and her children. I have her telephone numbers and she has mine.
By the way, xxxxx said that she hadn’t received any package from you.

Fortunately, she was ready to renew contact with you and I was really happy that she could find strength and love in her heart.

Please pray with us as this latest miracle unfolds that Leah’s biological mother is comforted by this communication. Also if anyone else has experience with “keeping in touch” with your child’s biological mother and family I could use some advise from someone who has traveled this road.

Encounters with a Brown Bear

Couldnt resist posting this picture today. I thought Leah was playing hide and seek with me today instead she had an encounter with the Bear. When it got too quiet in the living room today I looked over my shoulder to see what Leah was doing and to my surprise I couldnt see her. I knew she didnt leave the room. When I called her name she didnt answer, so I did what most Mothers do. I started to call her name again and again. With each unanswered call I really became concerned so my calls got louder and louder. Not finding humor in the hide and seek thing and just prior to panic, out of the corner of my eye I see the above encounter. Ahhh a sleeping child. What a beautiful sight.

Sunday we will celebrate our second Mothers Day with Leah, and our 14th with Christopher. I continue to feel so blessed by God to be "Mother" to my wonderful children.
I share again, a letter I wrote to Leah's biological mother while we were in Ust Kamenogorsk. It was by the grace of God I was able to locate and meet, face to face with Leah's biological mother and hand deliver my letter. Mother to Mother we spoke of Leah. As we looked at each other I could feel a mothers love. Although she remained stoic her questions were those a mother would ask facing that which she faced. Our conversation was brief yet I believe both of us heard words we needed and wanted to hear. I received her permission to adopt Leah and she heard words of thanks and a guarantee I'd loved Leah as my own. A brief encounter yet one I will always cherish and remember especially on Mother's Day.
I pray our love for Leah, and the pictures we paint of the women who gave her life will be strong enough to enable Leah to constructively deal with the inevitable void she will no doubt experience to some degree when she comes to totally understand her adoption story.
I want to wish my own Mother a very Happy Mothers Day. I love you Mom and I thank you for giving so much of yourself.
To all who are following this blog I wish a Happy Mothers Day and if your dream of becoming a Mother has not happened as of yet, I pray for your journey and the child who waits for you.

The Starfish Story

Once upon a time, there was a wise man who used to go to the ocean to do his writing. He had a habit of walking on the beach before he began his work.

One day, as he was walking along the shore, he looked down the beach and saw a human figure moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself at the thought of someone who would dance to the day, and so, he walked faster to catch up.

As he got closer, he noticed that the figure was that of a young man, and that what he was doing was not dancing at all. The young man was reaching down to the shore, picking up small objects, and throwing them into the ocean.

He came closer still and called out “Good morning! May I ask what it is that you are doing?”

The young man paused, looked up, and replied “Throwing starfish into the ocean.”

“I must ask, then, why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?” asked the somewhat startled wise man.

To this, the young man replied, “The sun is up and the tide is going out. If I don't throw them in, they'll die.”

Upon hearing this, the wise man commented, “But, young man, do you not realize that there are miles and miles of beach and there are starfish all along every mile? You can't possibly make a difference!”

At this, the young man bent down, picked up yet another starfish, and threw it into the ocean. As it met the water, he said, “It made a difference for that one.”

Spending February in Florida has been so much fun. Leah loved the animal farm but didnt have any luck catching the chickens.

Leah is following in her brothers footsteps. After taking the tour on the Circle Line in NYC with our children this past Sept, Chris and I decided to stop in and see Christopher's agent and introduce her to Leah. Christopher has been with GENERATION MODEL MANAGEMENT since the age of three, and GEN TV since the age of 7. While we all decided that an education was first and foremost for Christopher, he gained enough experience and exposure to obtain SAG membership which remains intact for life as a dues paying member therefore his career is limitless.
We thought now that Leah was grounded, we would see what opportunities would present for her. After introducing her to Patty, Leah booked her first job with in days. She is officially now a model. This is her first photo shoot and can be found in the February Issue of Parents Magazine.

These photo's are for 3 very special people in our daugher's life The Holmberg's. Earlier in our blog you read about them. This wonderful couple travelled to Ust Kamenogorsk about 7 months before we did. It was there they met Leah as they were adopting their beautiful daughter Lauren. Leah and Lauren were crib mates, so Lars and Dawn saw Leah frequently. As they have shared with us, they began loving Leah along with Lauren. It is because of this family our daughter was loved and prayed for long before we met her. Aside from the wonderful gift of love and prayers, we were then given pictures of Leah from when she was 7 months old that the Holmbergs had taken. It was only by a miracle the Holmbergs had found our blog and contacted us while we were in Ust Kamenogorsk bonding with Leah. God had answered the Holmbergs prayer as Leah never left their memory and in finding our blog they were comforted in the knowlege Leah has a forever family.
The shirt Leah has on was one of the gifts the Holmbergs send to Leah and we want them to know we speak of them frequently to Leah and they will always be a part of Leah's adoption story. So until we meet in person some day they are correct in "Everyone Loves a Blue Eyed Girl".

We are celebrating the holidays in sunny Florida and we found Santa at the mall. Leah was soooo excited to see him and as you can see by her face, not a drop of fear. On Oct 6, 2006 Leah became an American citizen as we touched down at JFK. I was finally able to allow myself to believe I had a daughter. This photo was a gift to us from Lars and Dawn Holmberg. They adopted their daughter Lauren in Nov of 2005. Leah and Lauren were crib mates. The Holmbergs just happened upon our blog when we were in Ust adopting Leah and they were happily shocked and surprised to see the child they never forgot on our blog and in our lives. We have maintained our friendship and will one day reunite our children. Our hopes are that they remain friends for life as they began life together in that baby house in Ust Kamenogorsk, Kazakhstan.
This was our referral photo of Leah.
This is the first photo of Leah the day we met her. As you can see, I didnt center the picture to good. It was a very emotional day as we were told the night before we left the USA that Leah was no longer available for us to adopt, and we were sent a picture of another child. We were all overcome with emotion when the caregiver brought Leah in to us. We all knew at that moment Leah was born to be ours, and we were experiencing a miracle.

This is a photo of Leah a year later. Its so hard to express in words the effect Leah has had on all of us in her own special way. We all share a very unique and special bond with her, and she with us. Her bright smile and bubbly personality greets us each day and reminds us to always look for the miracles that are there if you only take the time and look for them.... A bird in flight, the rising or setting sun, a snow flake or an ocean wave. A kitten, a pumpkin or a bubble blown into the wind. All of these are miracles in and of themselves that are frequently taken for granted and then the moment lost. Leah takes each of us to that innocent place and those moments where only love and joy exist. How glorious it is to experience these moments. We are so thanlful to God for the miracle of Leah, a child he created just for us who we can in return share with the world.
We are blessed!!!!!

365 Days

It feels like yesterday, and yet it seems like forever that Leah has been our daughter. We, as a family continue to be thankful for the miracle that God has blessed us with by bringing this precious child into our family.

From a baby house in Ust Kamenogorsk, Kazakhstan a year ago Leah entered our lives and hearts, and we have never been the same. We have experienced great joy and the purest type of love one can be blessed with. The unconditional love of an innocent child.

Leah has learned to love and to be loved. She has bonded with each of us in her own special way and we with her. Watching her grow and play and learn and experience life is an adventure every day. We have all learned to realize how special life is, and the importance of looking for miracles every day.

Chris and I have the added pleasure of watching our son and daughter form that special bond that only exisits between siblings. We again are so greatful that God opened our hearts to adoption because of the special relationship our children now share. Seeing them interact and share emotions is awesome. They are protective and playful and loving and caring to each other especially when it really matters. Christopher being the older brother never ceases to amaze us with the kind young man he has turned out to be. We are so proud he is our son.........

Last Day at the Beach 2007

We are greatful to God for the blessings he has given us all.
As we approach Sept 24th ( Gotcha Day) we are acutely aware it has been 1 year since Leah became part of our family forever. We reflect on the journey we as a family experienced, and we give thanks to God for the lessons we learned about life and love and faith.
Our son says it all when he tell us "you know I cannot imagine my life without Leah in it"
The bond is complete and we are so thankful we were chosen to be a part of this miracle.

And so as summer ends we look forward to fall !!!!!!!!!

We said "I love you " to Grandpa for the last time on May 25th 2007. Grandpa gave both Christopher and Leah beautiful memories and love unconditionally. Leah may never understand how much he loved her the moment she entered his life, but I am sure her heart was nurtured by his love for the 7 short months she was his grandaughter.
Christopher will miss Grandpa immensly. The memories he has will carry him into adulthood. Grandpa was always patient and kind not only to Christopher but to all he met. The love of a Grandfather is priceless. This Grandfather truly was a Gentleman who lived life to the fullest. At 93 and up until his death he lived life with a purpose. He went to 7th grade baseball games,family baptism's, parties and vacations to the beach. We were all blessed to be a part of his life. As the patriarch of his family grandpa was the rolemodel for what it is to be a real "man".

Leah and Christopher are having so much fun at the beach. The weather is beautiful and the beach is great. We will be celebrating Leah's 2nd birthday and my mothers 72nd birthday tomorrow. It is nice having special birthdays together at the beach. Pictures to follow tomorrow.

This is Alex. We met Alex and his parents while we were in Ust Kamenogorsk adopting our daughter. Alex was in the same baby house as Leah ,so we saw him everyday also while we were visiting . Alex has an infectious smile and is so full of life. His adoption story is also one filled with miracles. I have come to realize with each child and parent I meet that God truly has called us all by name, and thru International Adoption his plan is perfectly executed. Many of us begin our journey with our own dreams, desires and possibly photo referrals in hand. Somewhere along the journey of documents,expiration dates and travel plans Gods presence is palpable and his plan is revealed. Alex's family opened their hearts to that leap of faith required for Gods plan. After many twists and turns and a harrowing ride on that emotional roller coaster called International Adoption Alex's, Angie and Rory's miracle took place. God created another forever family. We were honored to have a front row seat to their miracle and we will never forget the experiences we shared with this lovely family.
It was with great anticipation that we were reunited with Angie,Rory and Alex at Leah's baptism. We were so touched they took the time out of their, I am sure busy lives to share Leah's special day.
We are now also honored to be included in Alex's special day. Alex will be baptised this Saturday. We are excited about meeting his extended family and also having them meet Leah. We pray we will be able to continue this bond Alex and Leah share.
This is a picture of Alma ( our wonderful coordinator in Ust Kamenogorsk) Alex and Leah. When we travelled to take custody of Leah we knew Alex would be going home just 2 short weeks later so we asked Alma if we could bring Alex a toy his parents sent to remind him they were coming to get him. It was a wonderful meeting and I believe Alex understood what Alma told him.

TWO BABES IN A MANGER In 1994, two Americans answered an invitation from the Russian Department of Education to teach morals and ethics (based on biblical principles) in the public schools. They were invited to teach at prisons, businesses, the fire and police departments and a large orphanage. About 100 boys and girls who had been abandoned, abused, and left in the care of a government-run program were in the orphanage. They relate the following story in their own words: It was nearing the holiday season, 1994, time for our orphans to hear, for the first time, the traditional story of Christmas. We told them about Mary and Joseph arriving in Bethlehem. Finding no room in the inn, the couple went to a stable, where the baby Jesus was born and placed in a manger. Throughout the story, the children and orphanage staff sat in amazement as they listened. Some sat on the edges of their stools, trying to grasp every word. Completing the story, we gave the children three small pieces of cardboard to make a crude manger. Each child was given a small paper square, cut from yellow napkins I had brought with me. No colored paper was available in the city. Following instructions, the children tore the paper and carefully laid strips in the manger for straw. Small squares of flannel, cut from a worn-out nightgown an American lady was throwing away as she left Russia, were used for the baby's blanket. A doll-like baby was cut from tan felt we had brought from the United States. The orphans were busy assembling their manger as I walked among them to see if they needed any help. All went well until I got to one table where little Misha sat. He looked to be about 6 years old and had finished his project. As I looked at the little boy's manger, I was startled to see not one, but two babies in the manger. Quickly, I called for the translator to ask the lad why there were two babies in the manger. Crossing his arms in front of him and looking at this completed manger scene, the child began to repeat the story very seriously. For such a young boy, who had only heard the Christmas story once, he related the happenings accurately...until he came to the part where Mary put the baby Jesus in the manger. Then Misha started to ad-lib. He made up his own ending to the story as he said, "And when Maria laid the baby in the manger, Jesus looked at me and asked me if I had a place to stay. I told him I have no mamma and I have no papa, so I don't have any place to stay. Then Jesus told me I could stay with him. But I told him I couldn't, because I didn't have a gift to give him like everybody else did. But I wanted to stay with Jesus so much, so I thought about what I had that maybe I could use for a gift. I thought maybe if I kept him warm, that would be a good gift. So I asked Jesus, "If I keep you warm, will that be a good enough gift?" And Jesus told me, "If you keep me warm, that will be the best gift anybody ever gave me. So I got into the manger, and then Jesus looked at me and he told me I could stay with him for always." As little Misha finished his story, his eyes brimmed full of tears that splashed down his little cheeks. Putting his hand over his face, his head dropped to the table and his shoulders shook as he sobbed and sobbed. The little orphan had found someone who would never abandon nor abuse him, someone who would stay with him...FOR ALWAYS. As Christmas approaches my heart will be reminded not only of the children I met in the baby house in Ust Kamenogorsk, Kazakhstan, but all children and adults alike who wake up Christmas morning not experiencing the love of family. My prayer is that they, like Misha will feel invited into the manger with Jesus, and realize that the offer of the warmth of their being is a gift to Jesus. Misha story is one of faith and hope. ORMOND BEACH -- Tait Andreyva Newman is one in 650,000, according to her father, Ken Newman.

He beams as he calls her "Little Miss Personality." The elfin 3-year-old with delicate cheek bones and a 100-watt smile lights up as her mother, Denise Newman, brings out a box of toys and mementos.

In seconds, she has pulled out and arranged on the floor a matryoska, the traditional Russian nesting doll hand-painted with purple and blue flowers.

Her older brother, Reid, 9, helps her in the awkwardly gentle way of older brothers.

Like many other adoptive parents, Ken and Denise Newman plan to tell their obviously cherished daughter how special she is because they were able to choose her for their very own -- out of an estimated 650,000 children currently available for adoption in post-Soviet Russia.

They'll also be able to tell her about how they traveled halfway across the world to St. Petersburg, Russia, to pick her out. They have videos of themselves in the waiting room at the orphanage holding a tiny, alert and enchanting 7-month-old Tait on their laps. They'll be able to tell her that she was carefully chosen -- the couple considered three other little Russian girls before deciding on Tait, whom they adopted just over two years ago.

They want everyone to know the blond, blue-eyed gamine has been nothing but a joy since they first saw her in an orphanage they say was one of the best in the former Soviet Union. "The best of the best would bring tears to your eyes," Ken says.

They adopted her through an agency in Arizona, where they lived before moving to Ormond Beach.

The couple is campaigning to make sure more people know that their story of a successful Russian adoption is the norm, not the exception -- and the vast majority of those 650,000 children in need of a family of their own are healthy, mentally and physically.

The Arizona-based agency they used has been in business for 27 years, handled about 3,000 adoptions, and, according to the Newmans, only had 10 cases in which the adoptive parents decided they couldn't keep the adopted child -- a phenomenon known as a disruption.

Tait, who loves her preschool and proudly shows off the latest gymnastics moves she's learned in her twice weekly class, is so clearly healthy and happy she could be a poster child for Russian adoptions.

The Newmans are willing to talk about their experience because they are more than a little tired of hearing the horror stories. They say the media has concentrated on the shock value of a few examples of Americans adopting Russian children with severe emotional and mental problems -- and left a false impression of what happens to most families who turn to the former Soviet Union to adopt.

Television programs and newspapers series have focused public attention on the danger of bring ing home a child who may be permanently unable to relate or bond to others -- children who were so deprived of nurturing and human contact in the orphanage that they are unable to form normal attachments.

Those cases, they contend, are the exception, not the rule.

Only a small percentage of the children from countries formerly part of the Soviet bloc are so severely damaged, they say.

They say they have met many other couples who have adopted children as normal and healthy as Tait, including several in Ormond Beach.

Couples who are thinking about adopting a child have several ways to make sure the child they adopt is a child that will bring them the kind of joy Tait has brought to them, they say.

"This particular orphanage has little, two-minute tapes of the children they'll send you. When you get them, the agency will show them to experts who can tell you if there are any signs the child has any kind of severe problem," Ken says.

They'd already sent experts tapes of other little girls from the orphanage and discovered that one child seemed to have a severe condition that could have cost hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical bills if they had adopted her.

Denise says, "Since we are both self-employed, we don't have the insurance to cover those kinds of costs."

So, they turned her down and waited. Then, they got the video of little Olga, who they later named Tait. The experts found nothing on the tape to indicate any problems with Olga.

So the couple got into the next stage of the adoption process -- traveling to Russia to meet the child and go through the government red tape.

"Russian bureaucracy is unbeliev able," Ken says.

The Newmans say the Russian authorities ask prospective parents questions about how they feel about taking a child with a disability and what level of disability they can handle.

They were also provided some information on Tait's background. "They gave us some very skimpy information," Denise says. "We know that the birth mother was 23, that it was her third pregnancy, and that Tait was a 34-week preemie."

Now, they report, she shows no adverse effects of having been born prematurely -- in fact she's tall for her age.

And Tait isn't the only child who found a home through the Newmans. Ken says they also were told about another child, a 5-year-old blind girl who had been taught how to manage with her disability in the orphanage but who would probably live out her life in an institution if she wasn't adopted by an American family.

He says they agreed to adopt her if no one else could be found -- and when they got back to the United States, he asked the adoption agency to help find parents for the little girl. He says that a Mormon family with five children of their own has adopted the little blind girl, who he says now "bikes, skies, takes dance classes."

This is where our adoption journey began. As you can see by the date on the article it was Feb 2001. While vacationing in Florida that year, Chris and I were talking about wanting more children and adoption was our only option. In the local paper we came across this article and were surprised to read the Newman's had published their phone number for anyone to call if they had questions.
We called, and were greeted by a cheerful and outgoing Ken Newman. He immediately made plans to meet us for lunch with his wife Denise and then 3 year old Tait. We were so surprised that this family took time for us, complete strangers. We had a wonderful afternoon that beautiful sunny day in Ormond Beach talking with the Newmans about International Adoption from Russia. The Newmans were candid and open about the leap of faith required to make this adoption happen, however they were equally candid about the joy their daughter brought them and about the thousands of children they left behind. They were passionate about wanting others to know children do wait in orphanages for a forever family and this was their way of helping other children find families. We discussed agencies,fees,new money, money belts and gifts for the caregivers and translators and drivers. There was nothing we couldnt ask. The Newmans opened their hearts to us that day and they will forever be a part of Leah's adoption story.
When we returned to NY that Feb. I conducted an internet search for an adoption agency and of course found many. The agency I contacted then was ASA with Orson Moses as the director for foreign adoptions. We were sent a video tape and booklet to review. I dont know why we didnt start the long process of adoption in 2001, life went on and our adoption plan was put on hold but always on the back burner. Fast forward to April of 2005 and while surfing the internet again for an adoption agency I came across AIP and their photo listing. We all fell in love with a photolisted baby girl and the rest is history. I contacted AIP and found out the specifics. We sent in the fee and officially began the adoption journey. As an aside it wasn't until months into our adoption with AIP, I located the original video and booklet from 2001 and much to my surprise a business card from ASA with Orson Moses name on it. Orson was the same man we contacted 4 years prior to signing with AIP.
After completing our adoption and bringing Leah home I wanted to thank the people who took time with us that day in Florida 4 years ago. I searched the Newspaper's archives, found the article and called the Newman's again. I wanted them to know another child found a forever family because of their efforts. They were just as happy and outgoing as in the previous meeting. When we vacation again in Florida this February we will be meeting the Newmans and thanking them in person.

Grandpa's are great. We celebrated Grandpa's 93rd birthday on Nov 13. As you can see his grandchilden adore him. We are very lucky to have this gentle man as the patriarch of our family. He defines what family is all about. Patient,kind, caring and God loving. When Christopher was born, Grandpa spent alot of time with Christopher and was always patient with him. To this day they still spend time together raking leaves or mowing the lawn or swimming in the pool. Christopher has learned alot from this relationship and we as his parents are grateful for the bond they share.
Leah is now feeling the love of a grandfather and as you can see by her face she is lovin him. Especially that he shares his cake. It is wonderful to watch this relationship begin. Each answering a need. The young and old. We thank God for another year with Grandpa.....

I was finally able to get Leah to leave a headband on her head. I have been trying for ever. She wants no part of hair ribbons or barrets. I put them in and she immediately takes them out. I will keep trying though.
This little girl is such a love. We are amazed that after being with us for only 33 days she understands almost everything we say. We still feel so blessed to have her as our daughter. She wakes each morning with a smile that just melts your heart. It as if she is saying "life is good".

When Chris and I discussed who we would ask, this special lady came to both our minds. We knew Cathy would be understanding and especially supportive in our decision to adopt, and she would love our daughter.
As you can see by this first picture of their meeting we were right. A special bond has been formed and we know Cathy will have a special relationship with Leah. Cathy is one of the stongest mothers I know with all that she has had to endure in her own motherhood, and yet she still manages an infectious smile. Leah will come to know God because of the special gifts this wonderful women possesses and we thank her for becoming Leah's Godmother.

We arrived home exhausted, but safe and sound. We were able to fly home Oct 5th a day earlier than expected. We surprised Christopher and arrived at Grandma's house to find him doing his homework. Can I say how proud We are of him. When he heard Chris's voice as we came thru the door he came to us like a shot. Here are the first photos of Christopher upon our arrival. Pictures are worth a thousand words.
We travelled direct to JFK meaning we left Almaty at 1:50pm. The flight path was as follows:
Almaty to Astana 50 min layover (stay on plane)
Astana to Frankfurt (4 hour lay over)
Frankfurt to JFK
Total about 17 hours on plane with Leah on our laps. Talk about bonding.....
She did well for most of the trip. Ocassional outbursts of crying and good for her I wanted to do the same. Being an adult I refrained. Sleep was minimal for us and Leah took 2 long naps. We were very glad to touch down at 12:30pm to a bright sun shinning day. Customs was a breeze and the agents there we so nice in welcoming Leah to her home. They told her she was an Island Girl now.
Mary my wondeful friend came and picked us up. I could see she was so happy to finally meet Leah. Our car was at Mary's house, so when we arrived there we left right away as we really wanted to get back to Christopher. Mary understood and we were so greatful, friends like her dont come along often she is a keeper. With a kiss good bye and a bottle of water we were off.
Leah went right to Christopher when we got in the door and gave him a big kiss. It was as if they were never apart. After about and hour we went home. Lasagna was waiting as my mother (Nanny) knew we would be hungry and tired. Thank God for MOM'S

We have our embassy appointment today at 3 pm. We are taking the final steps in our journey to adopt Leah. Here are some photos that say it all. Children are such perfect deliverers of unconditional love.

Leaving on a (very old) Jet Plane

We have left Ust Kamenogorsk. It is bitter sweet as we board a really old plane which is evident as you can see by the window Leah is gazing out of. We are flying onto Almaty, and out of her old life. She leaves in Ust Kamenogorsk the roots of her beginning. She is a brave little girl, and has embraced all the wonderous things she is experiencing each day. Mostly she is happy and smiling. She looks content as the bonds of trust are being formed. She is wide eyed most of the time taking it all in. It is such an amazing experience for us. Did I mention what an old plane that was. For those of you really close to us I am sure you are having a goooood laugh right about now.
We have had our clinic visit today and again Leah passed with flying colors. She had everyone laughing and cooing at her. She really knows how to work a crowd. You will all see when you meet her....

Christopher this story and blog would not be complete with out you. The joy we have experienced being your parents is abundant. We are missing you every day, and now we are counting down the days to get back to you. We give thanks to God for the gift of our children, and a promise to try and be worthy of these miracles.
We will be leaving Ust Kamenogorsk on Sunday the 1st of Oct to fly back to Almaty where we will complete the American Embassy side of our adoption. Christopher having taken this flight path on our first visit to Ust Kamenogorsk you know what is in store for your sister.
We were able to visit with Sveta last night and she says hello. She brought us a local map of Ust and we marked everywhere we had visited as the map is in Russian. What a wonderful memory for us all. Love You Mom Dad and Leah xxxooo

Going Back to Say Goodbye

Today we went back to the Baby House to share goodbye's. We wanted to speak to Leah's caregivers one last time, and give them a chance to see she was doing well. These ladies are some of the caregivers we knew from our first trip. As we entered Leah's room these caregivers, with tears in their eyes told us they were so happy we came back. As we picked Leah up on Sunday, they hadn't a chance to say their goodbyes to her and were heartbroken on Monday to find she was gone.Leah was happy to see them, and the love they have for each other was evident in all eyes and actions. They again told us how Leah chose us as her parents. They retold the story of how Leah behaved when 2 other families visited her in attempt to find a child to adopt.Because Leah cried ALOT they chose other children.We will always thank God for Leah's tears on those days and future tears now will serve as a reminder. The caregivers also asked about Christopher? They remembered his smile and could see how much he loved Leah.
As they held Leah for the last time we sensed the reassurance they were giving her as they spoke and pointed to us. Their tone was calm and filled with excited happiness. Leah was being told WE ARE HER MAMA AND PAPA from the people who have loved her since her birth. We sensed she understood. After talking with us about her likes and dislikes, sleep schedules and meal times we asked one last question of them. What would you like us to tell Leah about you. After a brief silence they said "Tell her we loved her and want her to be happy".
After exchanging a few small gifts and admiring the curtains and new paint on the walls of the room it was time to go. Leah was in the play area with the other children and when we called her name to go SHE WAS READY!!Big smile,arms outstretched,confident and comfortable. No tears. A perfect ending to her time spent at the baby house. We hugged,kissed and expressed our heartfelt thanks to those who loved and cared for our daughter......
